I had a wonderful time last night speaking at a ‘Relationship Revolution’ event organised by Stylist Magazine. The evening involved 25 minute sessions with three groups of around 30 attendees in each group. We discussed the secrets of effective communication and emotional resilience within couple relationships.
Several people asked me for the ‘list of strategies for emotional well-being’ which I didn’t have time to discuss in full last night, so I have typed it below.
This list is just a few ideas of positive ways to de-stress and enhance our emotional well-being, obviously there are many more, feel free to share your favourite positive coping strategies below!
Putting down the phone and taking a break from social media!
Talking face to face with those we care about
Eating tryptophan rich foods – e.g. bananas, milk, chicken, dark chocolate, nuts
A view over natural water
Sleep (each hour before midnight is worth double)
Exercise in day light
A view from height (helps to put issues in perspective)
Meditation or mindfulness
A hobby, especially creating something
Favourite Music – Dance!
Books and films, especially those with positive themes
Pets and animals
Helping & praising others
Banning criticism and any negative words to ourselves or others – replace criticism with curiosity!
Crunchy foods e.g. carrots!
Sing your problems
And don’t forget my main message… try to communicate your engine rather than your exhaust, and listen for the engine of others (i.e. their self-esteem and what is creating their emotions).
